What is Gorge Walking?

Gorge walking, also known as canyoning or gorge scrambling, is an outdoor adventure activity that involves traversing a river gorge by walking, swimming, climbing, and jumping. What to expect when Gorge Walking in South Wales

On the day itself you will first meet one of our experienced guides. They will firstly explain how the activity will run and then issue you with the kit for the day. This will include a warm winter wetsuit, helmet and buoyancy aid.

After getting kitted up you will then receive a safety brief and then the action will begin. You will slide, jump, climb and swim your way down the river Mellter and then up the river Sychryd. You will take on challenges such as ‘the shocker’ and ‘Loonies leap’. There are plenty of challenges for everyone on our gorge walking activity. However all challenges are optional, we operate a challenge by choice policy at Ty Coppi Adventures, which means you can do as much or as little as you want. All challenges in the river are avoidable and our instructors will choose the best route for you.

Safety Precautions for Gorge Walking in Wales

​At Ty Coppi Adventures we hold your safety in the highest regard. All of our guides are qualified white water operators, with a wealth of experience they are also first aid trained. They will ensure that everything you do is tried, tested and safe to do. Our guides will give you tuition on how to safely maneuver, jump and slide while in the gorge to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience.

Essential gorge walking safety equipment

We provide all the essential safety equipment such as helmets, buoyancy aids and wetsuits. Our guides will bring other essential safety equipment such as a safety bag with all the necessary first aid equipment and throw lines for river rescues.

We do require you to bring a few things. Such as sturdy footwear that laces up, swimwear for use under your wetsuit and shorts to wear over your wetsuit.
 

Guidelines to follow while gorge walking

​Gorge walking is a fun and exciting activity but it is essential that you follow the guidelines given to you by your experienced guide. These guidelines include being cautious when moving in the river, following your guide and only jumping into the river when briefed to do so.

Equipment Required for Gorge Walking in Wales

For introductory gorge walking in Wales the only equipment required is helmets, buoyancy aids and wetsuits. More advanced Gorge walkers and Canyoneers can advance to utilizing rope work to make the activity more challenging and tackle more extreme rivers.

Our minimum age for gorge walking is 8 years old.

Can I go gorge walking alone or do I need a guide?

It is highly recommended that you use a guide while gorge walking as rivers can be extremely dangerous environments. Without a guide you are putting yourself at risk.

What is the best time of year for gorge walking in Wales?

Gorge walking can be done all year round however it is arguably more pleasant in the summer with the warmer weather. Even with a winter wetsuit and neoprene gloves and socks it can be cold in the rivers during the winter months.

Do I need to have previous experience to go gorge walking?

No previous experience is required. We can provide a great experience to all ability levels. 

What should I wear when gorge walking in Wales?

​When gorge walking you should wear a winter wetsuit, buoyancy aid and helmet. These are the three essential items to ensure safety in the river.

Are there any health or fitness requirements for gorge walking in Wales?

Gorge walking is a reasonably physically demanding activity, however it can be completed by most people with a basic level of fitness. Gorge walking does require you to swim at point however it is not a requirement to be able to swim, using a buoyancy aid means even a very basic level of swimming ability is adequate.

What if it rains during my gorge walking tour?

Rain doesn't often affect Gorge walking, as we are getting wet in the river, however if river levels become too high to do the activity we can offer you an alternative activity, reschedule or offer you a refund.
